I made a cute Magic Reindeer Food Tag, that I put on scribd. I can't get a picture to post, but it's cute. It's a different poem than all that I have seen floating around the blog world. My friend had it from years ago when her oldest was in preschool in Washington state.
Magic Reindeer Food
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup red or green sugar crystals (for cake decorating)
A lot of recipes call for glitter. That depends on how you feel about it. You can make colored sugar by just take some sugar and drop a few drops of food coloring in the sugar. Then take a fork and stir it until the sugar is colored evenly and there are no lumps.

12 Day's of Service
I love doing the 12 day's of Christmas. It's a fun tradition. For family home evening this week, we talked about service and how it can brighten the lives of the people we serve and also how it can brighten our lives. We talked about the people in our lives, who might need some kindness this holiday season. We came up with lots of names and I told the kids to think about it.
Well, I have to be honest, I have been stressing about how to pull this tradition off this year. Things are super tight, they always are in December (my husband works on commission), but this year seems extra tight. So I have been trying to think of alternative ideas for the 12 day's. One of the things that has been bothering me is the fact that we know so many people who could use the service and kindness this holiday season. I came across this post, at I Can Teach My Child and I loved it! 12 day's of random service! Is there a better way to teach service, other than my doing service? I think my kids will love this. I know that I am way excited. We can bless lot's of lives in a short time.
Some of my ideas are:
Take a warm loaf of bread to a neighbor.
Do some cleaning for a friend (vacuum, mop, dust)
Make cookies for the bishops family
Take dinner to a someone who really needs it
Leave a "dinner in a bag" on someones doorstep
Visit an elderly neighbor
Take a friend their favorite candy bar and attach an uplifting quote
Go caroling
Babysit for a friend
Invite friends over for dinner
Have a neighborhood Christmas movie party (for the kids) give the moms a break!
Make an ornament and take it to someone
These are just a few of the ideas going around in my head. We may or may not do some of these. I have to discuss it with my kids in the morning. I am excited to hear what ideas they come up with. I think this will be a great way to teach my kids about service.

Prep and Landing: Worth Watching Agian

A Christmas Tale for Mom's
'Twas The Night Before Christmas...Mom Style
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the abode
Only one creature was stirring & she was cleaning the commode.
The children were finally sleeping, all snug in their beds,
while visions of X-Box & Barbie flipped through their heads.
Yes, and dad was snoring in front of the TV,
with a half constructed bicycle propped on his knee.
So only the mom heard the reindeer hooves clatter,
which made her sigh, "Now what is the matter?"
With toilet bowl brush still clutched in her hand,
She descended the stairs, and saw the old man.
He was covered with ashes & soot, which fell with a shrug,
"Oh great," muttered the mom, "Now I have to clean the rug."
"Ho Ho Ho!" cried Santa, I'm glad you're awake."
"your gift was especially difficult to make."
"Thanks, Santa, but all I want is time alone."
"Exactly!" he chuckled, "So, I've made you a clone."
"A clone?" she muttered, "What good is that?"
"Run along, Santa, I've no time for chit chat."
Then out walked the clone - The mother's twin,
Same hair, same eyes, same double chin.
"She'll cook, she'll dust, she'll mop every mess.
You'll relax, take it easy, watch TV and rest.
"Fantastic!" the mom cheered. "My dream has come true!"
"I'll shop, I'll read, I'll sleep a night through!
"From the room a bove, the youngest did fret.
"Mommy?! Come quickly, I'm scared and I'm wet.
"The clone replied, "I'm coming, sweetheart."
"Hey," the mom smiled, "She sure knows her part.
"The clone changed the child and hummed her a tune,
as she bundled the small one in a blanket cocoon.
"You're the best mommy ever. I really love you.
"The clone smiled and sighed, "And I love you too.
"The mom frowned and said, "Sorry, Santa, no deal.
That's my child's LOVE she is going to steal.
"Smiling wisely, Santa said: "To me it is clear,
Only one loving mother is needed here.
"The mom kissed her child and tucked her in bed.
"Thank You, Santa, for clearing my head.
Sometimes I forget, it won't be very long,
before they'll be too old for my cradle and song.
"The clock on the mantle began to chime.
Santa whispered to the clone, "It works every time.
"With the clone by his side, Santa said: "Goodnight.
Merry Christmas, dear Mom, you'll be all right."
As a mom we do the work of so many. It's easy to get discouraged and there are day's that I want to sit down and throw a temper tantrum alongside my darling 2-year-old. I know that I have had day's when I have wished for a clone or a little more help.
Sometimes we forget that we have the greatest gift, ever given. We have the gift of baby's and kisses, chunky fat rolls and belly laughs. Games of hide n ' go seek and the privelage of wiping tears away and kissing owies. We have the gift of being a mom! As hard as it it being the mom, I wouldn't trade it for anything in all the world.
Now go find you kiddo's and give them a hug!

Candy Cane Obsession

I love Christmas books. I love stories about baby Jesus and about His birth, but I also love a good Santa Clause story. Check out 3 of our favorites. This book is hysterical and makes me laugh out loud. The little boy cracks me up. I especially love the illustrations. The one of him in his pajama's is so funny.
Armed with the facts, young Alfie sets out to prove to the world that Santa Claus does not exist but no one pays attention, especially his sister Noelle, whose only request of the man in red is a nicer big brother.Cantankerous child Alfie F. Snorklepuss, who tells everyone who will listen that Santa Claus doesn't exist, gets a much-needed attitude adjustment from the man in red who takes him on an eye-opening journey to the North Pole.

We just got this book from the book order! I love it! We bought the companion book last year and they are both just really fun stories that the kids enjoy.
Knowing that he will need some help pulling his sleigh around the world on Christmas Eve, Santa begins to meet with an array of animals to find just the perfect group to assist him with his very important, high-flying task.
I bought this book last year and my kids loved it. It's so funny. When Santa attempts to hire additional employees to help with the very busy season ahead, he finds it difficult to find the suitable workers he needs as the mermaids make the gifts wet, the fairies leave glitter on everything, and the wizards accidentally transform him into a frog. We used it for a present exchange last year. Every time we said the word toys the kids had to pass their present to the right. Super fun!

I love to shop

Holiday Dilemma
Is anyone else having a hard time refraining themselves from hanging up the Christmas decorations? I can't begin to tell you badly I want to skip Thanksgiving decor and jump right into the Christmas holiday. This is so unlike me. Each year I just think that the stores push Thanksgiving right out the door and go right to the Holidays. It usually makes me so sad and sometimes mad. I have even told managers before that I think it is ridiculous (most of them actually agree and blame it on corporate). But this year I have been sucked into the craziness of it all. I want to start playing Christmas music, I want to finish my holiday shopping, I want to bake goodies for my neighbors and serve them on Christmas plates. I want to pull out all of my nativities and place them in each room. I am hoping I am not alone in this...... The good thing is I haven't fully succumed, I just haven't decorated for Thanksgiving!

Brandy's Christmas Wish List
My mom had a Food Saver when I was kid, but I guess I never appreciated how cool these are! My friend Kim over at All About Food Storage uses one and I got to see it in action the other day. Now I am dying to have one! I would be able to make massive amounts of Granola all at one time and seal it in bottles. Pretty and convenient!

Have you seen this Etsy shop? It doesn't have to be the pendant, in particular. Any of them will do. I think I'm switching to Team Jacob. The boy is too cute!
This will definitely be under my tree. If I can wait that long to get it. Oh, who am I kidding. December 8th, I'll be buying myself an early Christmas present.

Some of my Favorite Holiday Decorations
What to post, what to post? I thought it would be fun to share with you a few of my favorite holiday decorations and why I love them so much.
What would Christmas be without a nutcracker? I got this one last year on clearance. He is so much fun. He plays music and his leg and head move. We try to go to the Nutcracker every year, as our cute little neighbor is in it. We didn't make it this year and that was sad, but sometimes life gets in the way.
I have a ton of nativities. I love them. I love how each one is different, but each depicts the same glorious event. I have 7 of them and every year since I have been married I have tried to buy a new one. I also have several pictures set up in beautiful frames. I think that they are beautiful. I think being a mother makes you appreciate the beauty of the scene even more. I love depictions of the Christ Child and the way that His mother, Mary holds him so tenderly and looks at him with so much amazement. Had He been a child of normal birth, she would have still loved Him and looked at Him with the same adoration, because she was His mother. Don't we all look at our children that way?
All the stockings you will find, hanging in a row... This was a gift the 2nd Christmas that Josh and I were married. His mother gave it to us and it is something that he had from his childhood. She made it when she first was married and it has their last name across the top. Being that Josh is their only son, we got it. We do have a wood burning stove, but no mantle. The two Burgundy stockings that are kind of hiding are also favorites of mine. Those were a wedding present. They are crocheted and they are so alike, yet each one is unique. Beautiful addition to our holiday memories.
I love Snowmen! Although I have oodles of Snowmen decor, this is one of my favorites. Another D.I. treasure.

Someday, when I have time, I want to mass produce them for my family present. Already have something planned for next year, so it will have to be Christmas 2010.
I love the word Believe! It can imply to holiday spirit, Santa Clause, and also the birth of the Savior. Believe in what you will!!! I love the Polar Express, because of the theme and the idea that it passes onto our children. She made it when she first was married and it has their last name across the top. Being that Josh is their only son, we got it. We do have a wood burning stove, but no mantle. The two Burgundy stockings that are kind of hiding are also favorites of mine. Those were a wedding present. They are crocheted and they are so alike, yet each one is unique. Beautiful addition to our holiday memories.
I love Snowmen! Although I have oodles of Snowmen decor, this is one of my favorites. Another D.I. treasure.
This is probably my very favorite holiday decoration, other than my new picture! I picked this up at a yard sale several years ago. I paid $20.00 for it, which is way more than I would normally spend. I had to have it, though. So cute!! It's made out of fence material. Someday, when I have time, I want to mass produce them for my family present. Already have something planned for next year, so it will have to be Christmas 2010.
I love the word Believe! It can imply to holiday spirit, Santa Clause, and also the birth of the Savior. Believe in what you will!!! I love the Polar Express, because of the theme and the idea that it passes onto our children. BELIEVE in the magic of Santa, believe in the unseen, believe in friendship, believe in others, believe in yourself!! Have a great weekend everyone! We'll be back next week!!

Gingerbread Cookies
Isn't it funny how recipes can be so similar, but just a little different. Here are both mine and Mandee's recipes for gingerbread cookies. Similar, just a little different. I love these one's because they have the pudding in the mix. I don't like the gingerbread that has molasses in it. I know it's more traditional, but just not a fan.
Brandy’s Gingerbread Men
3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Butterscotch Instant Pudding
1 egg
2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. ground ginger
1-1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
BEAT butter, sugar, dry pudding mix and egg in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Mix remaining ingredients. Gradually add to pudding mixture, beating well after each addition. Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm.
HEAT oven to 350°F. Roll out dough on lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch-thickness. Cut into gingerbread shapes with 4-inch cookie cutter. Place, 2 inches apart, on greased baking sheets. Use straw to make hole near top of each cutout.
BAKE 10 to 12 min. or until edges are lightly browned. Let stand on baking sheets 3 min. Remove to wire racks; cool completely. Decorate as desired. Insert ribbon through holes to hang cookies on tree.
Mandees Gingerbread Men
½ cup shortening
Mix together egg, shortening, and brown sugar. Add remaining ingredients. Roll out dough and cut into gingerbread men shapes with a cookie cutter. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Decorate with frosting and candy!

Meet Bernard
Ignore the blurry, picture if you will. This is Bernard, he's our Magical Christmas Elf. This is a new tradition that we started this year and has been so much fun. I told my kids that Bernard was a magical elf who had come to watch them to see if they were naughty or nice. Every night Bernard goes and reports to Santa Clause on how they were that day. He moves around our house and every morning the kids have to look for him to find out where he will be watching from that day.My 6-year-old is the one who is most into this. Every morning the first words out of his mouth are, "I've gotta find Bernard." It's been a lot of fun to hide him all over my house. This morning he was ontop of our light sconces in the living room. The kids enjoy looking for him. It's a fun new activity that I think we will keep as a new family tradition.
